My Accessories

CA&LOU Spring/Summer 2012
My final accessory is from the CA&LOU collection for Spring/Summer 2012, I used a replica of the bracelet that I bought from the high street chain New Look, I then used Gold spray paint to alter the wrist cuff to my personal specifications.

My Accessories

Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2012

The clutch bag above is part of the Alexander McQueen collection for Spring/Summer 2012, I chose to include this particular piece within my editorial because it relates back to my chosen theme of fish, the delicate filigree shapes that form the handles look almost like coral or seaweed. I made my own version of this clutch bag for my shoot by gluing a collection of rings to a disused glasses case which I then coved with cream fabric and decorated. Although not identical I believe it works well in my shoot and is a direct reference to this particular piece from Alexander McQueen’s collection.

Givenchy Spring/Summer 2012

This necklace is from the Givenchy  jewellery collection for Spring/Summer 2012, I didn’t want to reference something that had too much of a generic connection to my theme of fish so instead I decided to link my second accessory back to my theme of metallic’s.  The image below is of the necklace I used within my shoot. I originally bought the piece as a part of a bag and added a simple chain t from an old necklace to connect the three pieces together in turn creating a decorative collar.

Alejandro Ingelmo Spring/Summer 2012

These particular shoes are from  Alejandro Ingelmo’s spring/summer collection 2012, I think they really fit in well with my identified trend of metallic’s, I found a similar pair on the high street which feature as the accessories in image one on my final editorial.

My chosen Magazine... AnOther

As part of my brief I have been asked to suggest a publication that best suits the style of my editorial, as an earlier part of my research I chose to look at a wide range of fashion magazines for examples of their still life photo shoots. After much analysis I have decided that the style of my work best suits that of Another Magazine. My main reason for choosing this publication is because of its harsh use of colour. Many of Another magazines existing shoots being either still life or model based are very rich in colour. This is a continuing aspect of the magazines work and continues with each publication. The use of both colour and creativeness often help keep the narrative of the story to an understandable level.

Another Magazine is lifestyle and fashion magazine that incorporates all aspects of art and design. It has no specific aim as far as gender is a wear and tends to look equally at the various aspects of art and fashion that appeal to both the sexes.  It was launched in 2001 under the umbrella publishing company Dazed Group and is currently published Bi-annually (twice yearly). The current Editor in Chief is Jefferson Hack.

My Final Editorial Image

Here are my four final images,  when producing my shoot I took a vast number of photographs and have now edited them down to create my four page editorial. I used Photoshop to change the colour and saturation of each image giving all for a strong tint of blue, adding to the icy feeling I have aimed to create. I also used the liquidifying tool to help make my blocks of ice look as though they are melting as the story progresses. I have found this to be far more successful and less time consuming than just relying upon the ice melting on its own. Each shot also features a different accessory helping to build a narrative and take the viewer through my editorial one step at a time.

Test Shots

In preparation for my shoot I took some test shots of the fish I had bought earlier. Some of which I had frozen in blocks of ice. I used a desk lamp and a sheet of bright blue a acetate to create a coulored gel producing an unusual lighting effect for my work. On the whole I am very happy with my shots and feel most comfortable progressing on to producing my final shoot.

Rainbow trout I froze in a plastic container, I love the colours and the way in which my camera flash has reflected in the scales of the fish. This particular piece will feature as a main component with in my shoot.

Mood Board 2

My second mood board, I have included accessories as well as some of my original photography and suggested pantone colours that fit well with my theme.

Mood Board 1

As part of the research and development  for my still life styling brief I produced mood boards comprising  of the various accessories I wish to use within my editorial. I have featured some of my photography as well as internet images and swatches of pantone colours from WGSN. My main reason for doing so was to create a certain look and theme I will maintain through out my final piece.

Some more images from the work of Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard, many pieces of her work convey personal or political messages however her work has a childlike quality and can be considered as a caricature of modern life. I plan to take inspiration from her work in order to add humour into my shoot.

Artistic inspiration

After deciding to go with my theme of fish I looked up artists that involve fish or sea creatures within there work, there are obvious installation artists such as Damien Hirst who has created large pieces of work involving fish and other cold blooded animals. Most often these particular pieces are featured in Perspex boxes and styled to look as though they are moving. All of which is very intriguing and form a unique starting point for my shoot preparation. Some images of Hirst’s work feature below;

The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living 1991

Isolated Elements Swimming in the Same Direction for the Purpose of Understanding 1991

Aquatic inspiration; A trip to the fish market
Upon focusing on the collections for the ocean trend of Spring/Summer 2012 I decided to pay a visit to my local fish market in Bolton, my main reason for doing so was to increase my archive of photographs and to focus more upon fish, noting there colour and shape as well as the way in which they were displayed upon the counters. The varied hues of silvers and blues are most interesting and would create a visually pleasing colour pallet for my editorial. The photographs below document my trip;

Most of the fish were displayed upon crushed ice with green parsley leaf for decoration, the contrast between the white ice, the silvery shade of fish and the vivid green is beautiful and something I could possibly include when designing my editorial.

Givenchy Spring/Summer 2012
Another designer collection from the Spring/Summer catwalks that also features this running theme of the ocean is Givenchy. The garments themselves are somewhat simple and feature bold cuts in pristine monochromes, the accessories and details however feature many unusual objects such as stiffened metallic frills that represent fish fins and enamel pendants created to look like shark teeth.
